**Breath of Fire: War of the Goddess (Breath of Fire)**
Creator: FlamePurge
Review Quote: "I cannot recommend this enough.This is possibly the best script rewrite I’ve personally played. The lore matches the later games, and the story makes a lot more sense. Names and items and equipment are changed and accurate. All the NPCs say new things, so it’s still worth talking to everyone. Really enjoyed this. HARD yes on if you should play!"

Review quote: "As great as Clock Tower has always been, this romhack pushes it even further with welcome changes and additions. This is without a doubt the best way to play this classic game. There’s really no reason to play the original anymore now that this exists. “Deluxe” is the definitive update for a once-hidden gem."

**DKC Mania (Donkey Kong Country)**
Creator: Hankhill89
Review Quote: "Those looking for a new adventure with Donkey Kong and Diddy need look no further than DKC Mania. If you’re an old fan from back in the SNES days, or even a newer one who was introduced to the series by its GBA conversions, who felt that the Retro Studios DKC-branded titles weren’t for you, then this is your game - it feels official, and is a must for any fan’s library. Those who know the original Donkey Kong Country well will find plenty to smile about throughout, and I can only hope that we’ll see similarly fantastic hacks of Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 in the future. **Final Fantasy IV - Ultima (Final Fantasy IV)**
Creator: 8-bit fan
Review Quote: "Very cool, some optional challenges become available at certain points of the story. There’s more exploration and new dungeons and new equipment. Battles are not just spam Fight, you can actually use commands without feeling they are not worth it. The addition of a bestiary is huge!
Also Quality of Life added here is great, such as detailed status while equipping objects, dash option, visible ATB gauge, toggle random battles…

**International SuperStar Soccer Deluxe Plus (International Superstar Soccer Deluxe)**
Creator: Manoel Messias
Review quote: "The main draw of this version are the 12 new teams that are added to the original roster. The bug fixes, battery save function and 1-minute games are all icing on the cake.

Language matters. A little note about Redump.org opening Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 dats

>DISCLAIMER: DISCLAIMER: Note about the current state of the [redump.org](https://redump.org) infrastructure: Our long-time admin iR0b0t has stagnated over recent years - he only makes a few fixes/improvements every few months, and doesn't communicate with the userbase effectively. The data is safe - it is backed up regularly. There's an alternative being worked on, only a few working on it. If you are interested in helping with a successor site, please PM.
>
>BTW, the admin wants to continue to keep \[newer dats\] [https://pastebin.com/raw/12SyZkve](https://pastebin.com/raw/12SyZkve)) behind a "contribution wall", i.e. all users need to submit about 5 dumps to access them - although they can all be redumps of discs that are already in the database. As a stop-gap until we can create a fully open site, here is a mirror of the datfiles: [https://dats.neocities.org/](https://dats.neocities.org/)

Hi everyone and happy New Year's Eve! Diego here from VideoGame Preservation Collective.
Some of you may noticed that our admin finally opened yesterday, the data collected in Redump for Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
There are other dats that will remain closed for the moment. This is not our decision and is not up to us to change it. However, that's not the point of this post.
See, the matter I wanted to adress is the lack of help or interest when it comes to Language Checking. All these years I've seen how everyone went mad when calling to the Scene doors for backups for their games and then complains were given about "ey, this dump is in german, not spanish" "Ey, isnt this the english release?" "Man, I needed the italy version and this is french... not even european french... Quebec french!"
I want you to take a look at this:
[http://redump.org/discs/system/ps3/sort/region/](http://redump.org/discs/system/ps3/sort/region/)
See the European games list. How many of them lack languages marked? Nearly none except a few exceptions. This is what happened when a few of us decided to unite and start checking a lot of those. And yes, it was a BIG pain in the ass. But it was worth.
The game profiles feel better. The info is there, and you can check exactly what each game contains. The look is even nicer when scrolling.
This is not only essential for the sake of documenting them, but it helps us discovering if there are missing releases. Documenting Xbox 360 regional releases for example... Is a terrible. One of the Fifa releases from Spain contains all the Scandinavian languages + spanish. So, I can expect that this release from Scandinavia should match!
For this reason, and especially for the Xbox 360, if you find out that our database has games lacking Language checking or the marked languages are wrong, feel free to write to us and provide info for it.
These years, Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation 3 gained massive atention when it came to Language checking, but with Xbox 360, is another story.
In fact, I believe that even games from Sony Playstation 2 from USA could need a few fixes too, too many people just marked "English" flag instead on checking deeper in that region.
And as always, remember that we still need help!

I've spent $1000 trying to make the ultimate game database (Starting with Sega Genesis)

From Reddit saved post — r/emulation, u/RaiseYourDoggers, Aug 03 2021
https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/owt5ho/ive_spent_1000_trying_to_make_the_ultimate_game/
I've been getting a lot of request for donations, so I started a [Patreon Here](https://www.patreon.com/VGComplete) To be completely transparent, I'll be making every $ earned and spent public here: [VGComplete Finances](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17n-Bc8aLZzLegvZMX5jjOvfI6zsIIdD8rH6RacBEdls/edit#gid=0)
**Edit: The letter A is now 100% COMPLETE! This is a small, but incredibly exciting milestone for me.**
When it came to emulation, I always wished there was a game database to go along with the games I was emulating that could do 3 things:
1. You could view games by Boxart, Screenshorts or Game Titles.
2. Find the complete contents for every game (Manuals, Boxart, Screenshots, Short descriptions)
3. Was easy and fun to use filters like genre, multiplayer options, publisher, year made ect..
So I started building it myself: [https://www.vgcomplete.com/genesis-boxart-ntscu](https://www.vgcomplete.com/genesis-boxart-ntscu)
Right now, only the letter A works for Sega Genesis. I'm really close to completing it, and we're just missing 4 manuals, 2 of which I'll be adding shortly.
I've also been translating Sega Genesis / Mega Drive game manuals that have fan translation patches, and ALSO finding pre-translated manuals and backing them up. You can see that here: [https://www.vgcomplete.com/translations](https://www.vgcomplete.com/translations)
I'd love feedback on this. This is just my early prototype and wondering what peoples thoughts are on this project. So far I've been getting positive feedback, but I'm pretty open here. Right now my main focus is on accuracy and completion, slowly building things out game by game.

Parallel port adapters: nes/snes, md/ss, psx, and more.
september 2019
From Reddit saved post — r/emulation, u/dajigo, Sep 26 2019
https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/d9fnvj/parallel_port_adapters_nessnes_mdss_psx_and_more/
Over the past few weeks, I've been building a set of controller adapters for use with the parallel port on my linux box.
So far, I have built interfaces for snes controllers (2 players), sega genesis (1 player), sega saturn (1 player), and psx (2 players, with 2 memcards). I'm planning on building a few more of these such as 2 player nes and a VB + 15-pin Famicom.
The controllers are recognized by all software (can be used in retroarch, etc), by use of the 'gamecon' kernel driver. The code for this driver is very interesting, as it was evident to me that it could be easily extended. It could also be considerably improved (the original code was reading psx controllers at 20 khz instead of 250 khz, for example).
The documentation for the interfaces and the driver is found on the linux kernel tree (Documentation/input/devies/joystick-parport.rst). Instead of getting power from the parport, I used 5v from a usb cable and dropped that using a red led.
The original reason for my even wanting to do this is the Namco volume controller (of all things), which is compatible with the regular psx-to-usb adapters one can buy... but it turns out those have a non-configurable deadzone. Yuck. Tried my Ultra-Racer with those adapters (great controller for RC de Go!, btw), and sure enough, there was a huge dead zone like you'd see on the cheap third party GameCube controllers.
[Also, I have a way of connecting my pc to my crt tv using component in 240p.](https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/awqolc/get_high_quality_240p_from_your_pc_to_your_tv/) Which meant I really wanted a way to connect my real SNES and Genesis controllers into my PC to do some back-to-back comparisons of real-console vs emulation in 240p mode. As for the result of those tests: In short, I'd rather play Genesis/MD in real hardware when possible, but I'd take the emulation of the SNES simply because the video is much cleaner and the audio can sound a bit cleaner (less muffled).
In any case, as I was finishing up my psx interface, I was gifted a brand new nyko classic trackball. It dawned upon me that I could use it as a mouse on my pc, as I had already seen that the driver had support for the snes mouse (by the good ol' raphael assenat, no less). Nevermind that I already have a kensington expert trackball..
So, a couple of days later, I got the trackball working as a mouse on my system. That's a pretty nice trackball and a fine way of playing missile command and golden tee...
So yes, after a few days of using a psx trackball as a desktop mouse, and due to having read a large amount of documentation regarding the psx controller protocol, I realized something which I thought was really cool.
I could make the guncon work, too. I was sure of it, the gun does all of the timing by itself, I'd just have to connect it to the luma signal of my hdmi-to-ypbpr converter which carries all of the sync info. As long as the gun didn't mind about being polled for data very frequently (say, 500 Hz), I'd be guaranteed to catch V-Blank... It would be hella simple!
[Today, I did it.](https://imgur.com/a/Jb6L0ej)
TL;DR This sort of parallel port adapter is really cool. It's a flexible and inexpensive way to connect a controller to a pc with extremely low latency. One can connect all sorts of peripherals to it. Including the guncon. I'll be posting code to github/pastebin/whatever very soon, just will clean out some commented/thrashed lines, etc.

[20 years of Dreamcast] A report on Redump & TOSEC current situation - Part 2 - The actual situation
september 2019
From Reddit saved post — r/emulation, u/diegorbb93, Sep 09 2019
https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/d1sll3/20_years_of_dreamcast_a_report_on_redump_tosec/
Well, time to show you what's been going behind the courtain.
# The PAL zone:
The good news: Yes, **we recently managed to complete it on TOSEC**. And **Redump is reeeeeally close**. Redump is only missing some regional releases that you can see here:
[http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Sega\_Dreamcast\_PAL\_Missing\_Games](http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Sega_Dreamcast_PAL_Missing_Games)
* ***Chicken Run \[T-36814D-05\]*** ***\[UK Release\]***
* ***Disney's 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue \[T-36813D-05\] \[UK Release\]***
* ***Ready 2 Rumble Boxing \[T-9704D-05\] \[UK Release\]***
* ***The Nomad Soul \[ T-9704D-05\] \[German release\]***
* \****Phantasy Star Online \[MK-51100-50\]*** \[Dumped version = Rev B (may not exist)\]
^(\*This could not exist. We intuit that it could because the header/ring code indicates this is a second revision from the original, but the original could have been cancelled before retail release for bug/glitch issues, leading the game to be released to the market on its second revision.) ^(If this one is confirmed to exist, TOSEC will need too.)
So yeah guys, it doesn't matter if TOSEC already got them, [we want that Chicken](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO0TJijsbhE) for Redump! Maddog owns these remaining discs but he's far away from home most of the time and only lands in his home twice a year for vacation, so, every dump we get sooner, the less we bother him and can help him focus in dumping other needed stuff.
When it comes to **Demos**, we've been really lucky that most of the existing ones were dumped, only a ***"RE Code Veronica demo \[835-006-50\]"*** is needed, in this case, for Redump \[[more info inside\]](https://dcemulation.org/dumpcast/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1607&p=3677&hilit=835+0006+50#p3677) as it was already dumped for TOSEC only once. Hence, we would like to provide not only for Redump, but also verification for TOSEC.
**The PAL zone has been one of the biggest challenges for Dreamcast preservation**.
* It wasn't until this year when great friends *JHMiller* and *TonyLizard*, and I, finally managed to see **all the Italian and Spain regional releases added to TOSEC and Redump after 20 years**! It took too long to do the homework for our countries.
* Some of these releases are getting really expensive and hard to find, like Soul Reaver regional releases.
* One interesting thing about the PAL releases: **Ring Codes on the disc allowed us to foresee if a release could match another**. For example, imagine Resident Evil 2 releases. We have a french cover release and a Eng/Ita/Spa cover release. Are the internal disc contents difference? Well: "T-7004D-0038SS / T-7004D-0112SS" are the ring codes for Disc 1 and Disc 2... For both releases. And after being dumped, yeah, both releases match. This doesn't apply to White Labels, but in a lot of cases, the White Labels turned out to match and be exactly the same as retail.
* These Ring codes details were discovered thanks to *Maddog's* work and all his mates in TOSEC. They have delivered along the years a lot of data documenting every single release, so this helped a lot when searching for undumped stuff.
* "**S*****cary stories to tell in the dark to the dumpers":*** **TOSEC's last ever undumped game from PAL region ... "Sydney 2000 "**[**Australian version**](https://segaretro.org/File:Sydney_2000_DC_AU_Back.jpg)".\*\* This release received voices from the "*Seven Network's Olympic Commentary Team*" from Australia. We managed to buy a disc (thanks BuffaloJoe!), that dumped ok with Redump method... But not with TOSEC. Weirdest case we've ever seen. Disc was clean as hell... But Track 06 showed a few damaged sectors. I had to ask in Reddit Australia for people to sell/donate the game so we could dump it for TOSEC, because it is EXTREMELY RARE to find on the internet. Three discs were obtained... ***ALL OF THEM WITH ERRORS AT THE TRACK 06 AGAIN***. Yes, we were f\*cking bad luck... I mean... For real. The 4 discs were a bit scratched near the external disc edge, and so, we couldn't extract a clean Track 06. The issue was solved like a miracle when one of the main TOSEC dumpers provided a dump from the White Label version recently . We had enough information after all the research over the dumps generated, that we were sure this WL matched the disc release. The dump was rebuilt and the story was finally over. 10 minutes to write this... More than 6 months to get this solved.
* Another interesting dump added to TOSEC and Redump comes from a game whose price has been increasing too much over time: ***Evil Twin \[T-46605D-71\]***. Many of us wondered what could be the difference between this one and "***T-46605D-80***", that was already dumped and was Multi5 language too. The mystery was finally solved and it turns out that -71 has french dubbing while -80 has german dubbing.
Users like *executter*, *Iggy,* *R00n5t3r* and *Maddog* around pushing the PAL zone all the way, have been dumping dozens and dozens of discs for TOSEC, and so, we apreciate this a lot after all these years of hard work!
Users like *JHMiller*, *TonyLizard, FatArnold, KailoKyra, TossEAC, Retaliator* and *Wiggy2K* helped us complete nearly the whole fullset for Redump (and added some essential dumps to TOSEC too!).
This was pure **real team work** to finally achieve these wonderful goals.
Ill discuss the White Label situation in the "Obscure" zone later, as I think is important to give it its own space.
# The NTSC zone:
This one got turbo mode this last year. TOSEC completed the USA fullset long ago, but a few alternative revisions were still undumped. Lot of work done by Darcagn, one of the main Dumpcast admins, and users like *atreyu187, MajorPBX, Nologic,* *fatman01923* and *Hotaru.*
Redump still needed to complete a good bunch of games and help was needed. The key? People like *RevQuixo*, *Redgoo*, *gorelord4e* or *User7*, who have liquided nearly ALL remaining discs pending for both, it was wonderful to see got added to fast in time.
[http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Sega\_Dreamcast\_USA\_and\_Brazil\_Missing\_Games](http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Sega_Dreamcast_USA_and_Brazil_Missing_Games)
Still, the following one is needed for both Redump and TOSEC, because we have some info that it could probably be a potential revision:
* ***Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes \[Sega All Stars edition\] \[T-1202N\]*** [***Pic***](https://imgur.com/ubYa56G) ***/*** [***Pic***](https://imgur.com/LelIiZq)
These Sega All Stars edition contained in a few cases new game revisions. Most of them have been dumped, but these two remains too. We expect they should match, but confirmation is essential in this case.
* \*\*\*Power Stone \[T-1201N\] \[\*\*\****Sega All Stars*** ***version\]*** [***Pic***](https://imgur.com/VMEYnrp) [***Pic***](https://imgur.com/PascoTq)
* \*\*\*Ready 2 Rumble Boxing \[T-9704N\] \[\*\*\****Sega All Stars*** ***version\]*** [***Pic***](https://imgur.com/pPze8pt) [***Pic***](https://imgur.com/Qr4zzbQ)
^(\*Finally, another three revisions that could not exist, we intuit they could because of the header/ring code theory:)
* ***\*Fur Fighters \[T-8107N\] \[Dumped version = Rev B (may not exist)\]***
* ***\*Metropolis Street Racer \[51012\] \[Dumped version = Rev A (may not exist)\]***
* ***\*Phantasy Star Online \[51100\] \[Dumped version = Rev B (may not exist)\]***
You can find a few more discs in the Redump wiki that werent dumped by Redump method but are expected to match other releases. These were already dumped in TOSEC and internal contents match. If those get dumped, they will probably serve as verifications.
As you can see, this is the NTSC zone and not the USA zone, and that is because there were a lot of brazilian releases that should probably match the USA versions, but still, you never know.
There's still some demos needed for Redump and TOSEC that aren't easy to find. I can assure you many of these are only in

What is the emulation scene like over in Japan? How do Japanese gamers feel about emulation in general?

Reading an article on how Japanese fans were asked to share their favorite Playstation games for the Reiwa generation and that got me thinking.
We know the truth that not every game will become available in digital stores, either for licensing reasons or maybe the game isn't popular enough to warrant the re-release. In some cases the hardware is so specific, in cases such as the DS/3DS.
So to my understanding Japan has been progressing more into handheld and mobile markets over the years, but regardless many games such as the PS2 Xenosaga series are fondly remembered yet never made it to PSN because the developers became a Nintendo subsidiary.
If anybody wants to play them, they'll need a PS2 on hand, but if your PS2 broke you're out of luck, and I'm sure a good portion of fans will realize that their physical hardware isn't going to last forever. That leaves emulation.
I realize that some emulators had Japanese developers like FCE, but aside from this and the occasional hack I don't hear much emulation news coming from Japan.
How is emulation received in Japan?

What are some emulation white whales?

I’ve spent the past few days reading old update blogs on Dolphin, and the crazy shit that they’ve done over the years (Zfreeze emulation, Ubershaders, HLE audio rewrites, Dragon Quest X in general) has gotten me wondering: what are some games/hardware features, that are still notoriously near impossible to get working in an emulator?

* PS1, PS2 and Saturn: Rip with your CD or DVD drive using ImgBurn
**BIOS Files:**
* Dreamcast - Use Dreamshell to copy the bios to the SD card
