The Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) has launched an initiative addressing Bambu Lab's violations of the AGPLv3 license concerning their 3D printer software. Bambu failed to provide complete source code for its modified slicer software and improperly combined AGPLv3-licensed code with proprietary libraries, violating license terms. Additionally, Bambu's aggressive actions against a developer who created compatible software modifications have further infringed on user rights under AGPLv3. In response, SFC is undertaking a multi-pronged effort including reverse-engineering proprietary libraries and maintaining compatible open-source forks to protect users’ rights and promote software repairability.
Software Freedom Conservancy (“SFC”) announces a new initiative regarding the software right to repair for users and consumers of 3D printers manufactured by Bambu Lab. After recent news of violations of the Affero General Public License, version 3 (“AGPLv3”), SFC staff began a comprehensive AGPLv3 compliance investigation of both the userspace software and firmware on Bambu’s devices. While the investigation is ongoing, two specific AGPLv3 violations have been confirmed.
