A study found that a single dose of psilocybin can produce lasting changes in personal values, such as increased life appreciation and self-acceptance, driven by acute feelings of spiritual euphoria and unity. Conducted with healthy volunteers, the trial showed no changes in personality traits or psychiatric symptoms but revealed shifts in values measured up to twelve weeks later. These changes were linked to the intensity of the psychedelic experience, particularly a state called oceanic boundlessness. Researchers suggest future studies use active placebos and test clinical populations to better understand psilocybin’s therapeutic potential.
