Maternal obesity significantly impacts the long-term health of offspring, increasing their risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and neurodevelopmental disorders. These effects may be mediated through epigenetic changes and alterations in the gut microbiome. Although weight loss before pregnancy can reduce offspring risk, more research is needed to understand causal mechanisms and develop effective interventions. Addressing maternal obesity is crucial for improving public health outcomes for future generations.

In addition to immediate implications for pregnancy complications, increasing evidence implicates maternal obesity as a major determinant of offspring health during childhood and later adult life. Observational studies provide evidence for effects of maternal obesity on her offspring’s risks of obesity, coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and asthma. Maternal obesity could also lead to poorer cognitive performance and increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including cerebral palsy.
