A CLI tool that explains why a process is running — it shows the launch chain from systemd/docker/pm2 down to a specific PID. Handy when debugging and it isn’t clear what is hanging around in your system.
Witr is a CLI and TUI tool designed to trace any running process, port, container, or file back to the exact cause of why it started, providing a clear causality chain rather than just system state information. It simplifies investigation by delivering human-readable output or an interactive dashboard, eliminating the need to manually correlate multiple system tools. Witr is cross-platform, available as a single static binary for Linux, macOS, Windows, and FreeBSD, and supports multiple installation methods including package managers and scripts. The project also offers an online browser-based tutorial and sandbox for learning without installation.
