Our Japan Voice Lite SIM Card plan comes with a real 070, 080 or 090 Japanese phone number - crucial for living and working in Japan.
Incoming calls are free, incoming texts are free too. Outgoing calls are charged by the minute, texts are charged per 160-character message. See the Usage Rates section below for details.
With this plan, it’s possible to use up to 3GB of data each month. The first 500MB is free, but if you exceed that, a flat fee of ¥2,500 applies.
Need a service that includes data? For the best value, choose our Japan Voice+Data SIM Card instead.
For the first calendar month of your service, you’ll only pay for the number of days between the day you activate and the end of the month. So, if you activate half way through the month, your first month is half price!
After that, you’ll be billed ¥990 on the 1st of each month.
Outgoing calls, outgoing SMS and data use over 500MB is charged separately.

How Billing Works
Your first month's plan fees will be pro-rated. You'll only pay for the number of days between the day you activate and the end of the month. So, if you activate halfway through the month, your first month is half price!
Your monthly fee will be taken on the 1st of every month. Any chargeable calls, texts, and data will be billed later, when we receive your usage data from the network. This can be 1-2 months later.
You can easily view detailed, itemized statements in your online account, so you always know what you're paying for.

Voice Lite is designed to be used for voice calling and SMS, not data. But, if you use some data by accident, don’t worry! We give you 500MB each month to use for free, so you won’t be hit by charges if you use some data by mistake. If you do use more than 500MB in a month, you’ll be charged a flat fee of ¥2,500 when we get your usage data from the network (this can be 1-2 months later).
If you need a Voice SIM Card service that has data included, our Voice+Data SIM Card is a much better fit for you!
Your phone number will be assigned once your SIM Card has been activated. Once assigned we will send you an email containing your phone number as well as displaying it in your online Mobal MyAccount.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to port in an existing phone number to a Japan Voice Lite SIM card. However, you can port your existing number to a Japan Voice+Data SIM Card
All usage charges are fully itemised in your online account, so you always know exactly what you are paying for. Your log-in information will be emailed to you when you activate your service.

You can use the Japan Voice Lite SIM Card in any unlocked phone that takes a physical SIM card and supports the 4G Band 1 (2100MHz) frequency.
iPhone 14 & 15 devices
purchased in the USAdon't accept physical SIM cards, so you'll need a Japan eSIM to use our service. All other iPhone models will work fine, as well as iPhone 14 & 15 devices that are bought outside the USA.
What does "unlocked" mean?
If your device is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM card from any network. If your device is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your device must be "unlocked" to work with the Japan Voice Lite SIM Card.
How do you know if your phone is unlocked?
If you purchased your device as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" device from a retailer such as Amazon, then your device is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our SIM card. If you purchased your device directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your device is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our SIM card. If you're still not sure whether or not your device is unlocked, simply contact the store where you purchased your device from.
My device is locked. What can I do?
If your device is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.
What Size Is the SIM Card?
Our SIM Card is multi-size to fit any device (Nano / Micro / Standard) – no need to worry about which SIM Card size you need.
Unfortunately, we're not currently able to accept cash as a payment method. You can pay for Mobal services using Credit/Debit card, or PayPal.
If you are under 18, you cannot order a Voice SIM or eSIM. Japanese Voice SIMs and eSIMs with a phone number are only available to customers aged 18 or over. However, a parent or guardian who is 18 or older may place the order in their own name. The person who places the order must also be the one to receive it, since their ID must match the name on the order. They will be the account holder and responsible for all charges.
Mobal's SIM and eSIM services use the Softbank and Docomo network. These have been found by OpenSignal, a global independent provider of network coverage information, to each cover over 99% of Japan's population. If you want to check whether your chosen Mobal service has coverage in your area of Japan, you can check out Softbank and Docomo's own coverage maps to make sure.

How It Works
1. Buy your Japanese SIM Card today for just ¥3,960.
2. When you receive your SIM Card, simply log-in to your online account to activate your service.
3. Enjoy using your phone! If you have any problems, check our easy-to-use online support pages, or contact our friendly Customer Service Team.
4. Line rental charges and call/text charges are billed to you on the 1st day of each month. You can view all of your charges in your online account. Visit your online account to update your details, view your bills, or move to a different plan.
5. Terminate your service any time – with no termination fees!
You can use Mobal Japan SIM Cards in any unlocked phone that takes a physical SIM card and supports the 4G Band 1 (2100MHz) frequency.
To make/receive voice calls, Android phones must support VoLTE (Voice over LTE): Voice calling over the Softbank network is only available on phones that support VoLTE and with Android 12 or newer installed. Please check your phone to find out if it’s compatible.
Important: We have found that some phones still aren’t able to make voice calls over the Softbank network despite meeting the above requirements. You can find a full list of phones we've found to be incompatible in the Voice+Data SIM Card section of this link.
iPhone Users:
Some newer smartphones, including USA-spec iPhones 14 and newer and Japanese-spec iPhone 17, do not support physical SIM cards. If your phone is eSIM-only, you’ll need a Japan eSIM to use our service.
Most other iPhones, including non-USA iPhone 14 and newer models and older Japanese models, still support physical SIM cards and will work fine.
If you're unsure, please check your phone to see if it has a SIM slot for a physical SIM.

What does "unlocked" mean?
If your phone is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM card from any network. If your phone is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your phone must be "unlocked" to work with a Mobal SIM.
How do you know if your phone is unlocked?
If you purchased your phone as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" phone from a retailer such as Amazon, then your phone is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our SIM card. If you purchased your phone directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your phone is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our SIM card. If you're still not sure whether or not your phone is unlocked, simply contact the store where you purchased your phone from.
My phone is locked. What can I do?
If your phone is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.

For your first month of service, your monthly Plan fees will be pro-rated. For example, if you activate your SIM Card on July 16th, you will be billed half of your regular monthly bill for the period from July 16th until July 31st. On August 1st, you will be billed in advance for the month of August. Going forward, you will be billed on the 1st of every calendar month until you choose to cancel your service.
Any chargeable calls and texts will also be billed to you on the 1st of the month.
You can view fully itemized statements detailing all of your charges in your online account - so you always know exactly what you are paying for!

iPhone 14 & 15 devices

What does "unlocked" mean?
If your device is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM card from any network. If your device is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your device must be "unlocked" to work with the Japan Voice+Data SIM Card.
How do you know if your phone is unlocked?
If you purchased your device as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" device from a retailer such as Amazon, then your device is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our SIM card. If you purchased your device directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your device is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our SIM card. If you're still not sure whether or not your device is unlocked, simply contact the store where you purchased your device from.
My device is locked. What can I do?
If your device is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.
What Size Is the SIM Card?
Our SIM Card is multi-size to fit any device (Nano / Micro / Standard) – no need to worry about which SIM Card size you need.
Unfortunately, we're not currently able to accept cash as a payment method. You can pay for Mobal services using Credit/Debit card, or PayPal.
If you are under 18, you cannot order a Voice SIM or eSIM. Japanese Voice SIMs and eSIMs with a phone number are only available to customers aged 18 or over. However, a parent or guardian who is 18 or older may place the order in their own name. The person who places the order must also be the one to receive it, since their ID must match the name on the order. They will be the account holder and responsible for all charges.
Mobal's SIM and eSIM services use the Softbank and Docomo network. These have been found by OpenSignal, a global independent provider of network coverage information, to each cover over 99% of Japan's population. If you want to check whether your chosen Mobal service has coverage in your area of Japan, you can check out Softbank and Docomo's own coverage maps to make sure.
Data is fast, free and and unlimited, you'll get 1GB, 5GB, 10GB or 30GB of fast 4G data per month.
If you use up your entire monthly plan allowance, your data speed will be reduced to a maximum of 200 Kbps. These reduced speeds may not be sufficient for streaming music or video, but they will still allow activities such as web browsing, emailing, posting to social media, Whatsapp messaging, etc.
Your high speed data allowance will be reset on the 1st of each month.

If you've ordered a Data Only SIM Card, you won't receive a Japanese phone number. If you've ordered a Japan Voice+Data or Voice Lite SIM Card, your phone number will be assigned once your SIM has been activated. Once assigned we will send you an email containing your phone number as well as displaying it in your online Mobal MyAccount.
Unfortunately, we're not currently able to accept cash as a payment method. You can pay for Mobal services using Credit/Debit card, or PayPal.
Mobal's SIM and eSIM services use the Softbank and Docomo network. These have been found by OpenSignal, a global independent provider of network coverage information, to each cover over 99% of Japan's population. If you want to check whether your chosen Mobal service has coverage in your area of Japan, you can check out Softbank and Docomo's own coverage maps to make sure.
Our Mobal SIM Cards only work in Japan. They will not work in any other countries.
You can use Mobal Japan SIMs in any unlocked device that takes a physical SIM card and supports the 4G Band 1 (2100MHz) frequency.
To make/receive voice calls, Android devices must support VoLTE (Voice over LTE):
Voice calling over the Softbank network is only available on devices that support VoLTE and with Android 12 or newer installed. Please check your device to find out if it’s compatible.
Important: We have found that some devices still aren’t able to make voice calls over the Softbank network despite meeting the above requirements. You can find a full list of devices we've found to be incompatible in the Voice+Data SIM section of this link.
Google Pixel Users:
With our Japan Tourist Data Only SIM Cards, there are currently known issues with the Google Pixel 7 and above handset range that primarily appear to affect the non-Japanese versions of these devices. Reports indicate that this issue can lead to frequent connection drops / intermittent issues with certain services and so (as we cannot take responsibility for device issues of this kind) we would recommend that you avoid these particular handsets when using our services.
iPhone Users:
Some newer smartphones, including USA-spec iPhones 14 and newer and Japanese-spec iPhone 17, do not support physical SIM cards. If your device is eSIM-only, you’ll need a Japan eSIM to use our service.
Most other iPhones, including non-USA iPhone 14 and newer models and older Japanese models, still support physical SIM cards and will work fine.
If you're unsure, please check your device to see if it has a SIM slot for a physical SIM.

What does "unlocked" mean?
If your device is "unlocked", it means that it can work with a SIM card from any network. If your device is "locked", it is restricted to work only on your regular carrier's network. Your device must be "unlocked" to work with a Mobal SIM Card.
How do you know if your device is unlocked?
If you purchased your device as an "unlocked" or "SIM Free" device from a retailer such as Amazon, then your device is almost certainly already unlocked. This means that it will work with our SIM card. If you purchased your device directly from your carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.), your device is probably locked and, therefore, it may not work with our SIM card. If you're still not sure whether or not your device is unlocked, simply contact the store where you purchased your device from.
My device is locked. What can I do?
If your device is locked, it may be possible to get it unlocked - simply ask your provider about this.
