From what I can tell, no one has ever embedded an NFC tag into the Benchy. SHOCKER! So I did it myself.
Introducing the NFC Benchy! A simple modification to the standard Benchy model that allows you to embed an NFC sticker tag into your Benchy to hold information.
Well, here is a list of examples:
The NTAG213 contains 144 bytes of memory, or about 130 characters. This memory size may limit you to only being able to store one of the listed items above. Longer URLs may not fit, so a link shortener is advised.
You will need to purchase some 10 mm x 20 mm Rectangle NFC NTAG213 Inlay Stickers as pictured. The model overcompensates for the size to allow for minor discrepancies in excess adhesive material surrounding the chip itself. Do not purchase a tag advertised larger than 25 mm x 12 mm. This is an example of what you should look for: https://store.gototags.com/clear-wet-nfc-inlay-ntag213-20-x-10-mm-rectangle/
Great! Simply print this model with your desired filament like you would any other model, no special profiling necessary. There will be an automatic pause in the G-code at layer 11, which will wait for you to place the sticker as shown in the images. Ensure the NFC sticker is completely placed flat in the cavity to avoid catching on the nozzle, and then supervise the printer after resuming the print for a short time to make sure no strands of purged waste are dragged onto the build plate after the pause, which could impact the quality of your Benchy.
There are many methods to write to the chip. The most accessible method is your phone, but there are USB devices that you can purchase to use with your computer as well. I recommend finding an NFC read/write tool app for your phone, which should utilize the NFC capabilities of your device to read and write to the tag that is now embedded in your NFC Benchy. As an Android user myself, I personally use wakdev's NFC Tools - Pro Edition, which I upgraded to after using their free version, NFC Tools. This app is also available on iOS and has been recommended by users on Reddit. Simply follow the instructions from whatever method you choose to use.
Glad you like it! Please give any feedback or experience with the model in the comments!
