Streaming music in any room is definitely a luxury, but it doesn't have to be an expensive one. Instructables user Piney shows us it's possible with a Raspberry Pi—or multiple Pis for multiple rooms—and you can control it all from your phone or tablet. Think of it as a budget-friendly Sonos.

We've shown you how to turn a Raspberry Pi into an AirPlay receiver, and even how to use Squeezebox to turn it into a stereo complete with speakers, but this build is a little different. It builds on the squeezebox stereo idea to create a multi-room, interconnected setup much like a Sonos, except much, much cheaper.

Piney walks through everything you'll need to make this work, including what you'll need to duplicate if you plan to install the system in multiple rooms. The whole thing is controlled by Squeezebox Media Server, and while Logitech's Squeezebox stereos are long gone, you can still get the software and set it up yourself very easily. Start your server, set up your Raspberry Pis on your Wi-Fi network in any rooms you want music, grab some speakers and some DACs (digital-to-analog converters), and you're ready to stream.
